This post is part of a regular series in partnership with FolioCue that introduces readers to new need-to-know artists each week and where to see their work next.

Didn't have a chance to make it to heavy-hitting Art Dubai art fair last week? There are still plenty of opportunities to see works by some of the Middle East's leading talent around the world, but if a trip to Dubai is on your agenda this spring, consider staying at the Fairmont Palm, where work by Azerbaijan up-and-comer Faig Ahmed is currently on view as part of 'art@fairmont,' a residency developed in partnership with Cuadro Gallery and Fairmont Hotels & Resorts (on view through May 5th, 2014).

Alternatively, for a few more weeks you can catch the piece that won Ahmed major critical acclaim at London's Victoria & Albert Museum. In 2013, he was short-listed to receive The V&A's 3rd Jameel Prize for contemporary Islamic art (on view through April 21, 2014).

Before you see the show, here's what you need to know about him:

  • Ahmed graduated from the Azerbaijan State Academy of Fine Art in Baku in 2004 and works with various media, including painting, video and installation.
  • Most recently, he has been studying the history and aesthetic of traditional Azerbaijani carpets so he may reinterpret this cultural symbol with contemporary relevance.
  • Ahmed superimposes digital patterns onto traditional compositions to create works with bold optical illusions and he applies these forms to sculptures and 2-dimensional works.
  • He has been included in exhibitions at Sotheby's and Phillips de Pury in London, the 52nd Venice Biennale Pavilion representing Azerbaijan, and The Islamic Art Festival in Sharjah, UAE.
