Video: Canali Takes Us Behind the Scenes With British Design Firm Barber Osgerby

"We try very hard to search for a new archetype, or a new way of looking at something that's very familiar."

Instead of highlighting its own wares, the Italian menswear brand Canali is putting the spotlight on other creative firms with its new video series 200 Steps.

The first episode of the series, which takes its name from the number of operations required to make and finish one of Canali's suits, features the British design firm Barber & Osgerby. Its proprietors Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby have manufactured everything from a portable glass lamp for Louis Vuitton to the torch used to carry the Olympic flame to London in 2012.

"We think an object has to justify its existence," Osgerby says in the video, which shows them sketching designs for a lamp, chair, and coat rack. "We try very hard to search for a new archetype, or a new way of looking at something that's very familiar."

Future videos in the series will feature Italian photographer Giovanni Castel, "Black Sails" actor Toby Stephens, and Amsterdam-based artist Job Wouters. But you can watch Barber and Osbergy's talk about their design process first right here.
