Margiela and Mykita's New Sunglasses Collaboration is a Match Made in Creative Eyewear Heaven

Think of these "dangerous" shades as your new anti-basic summer frames.

Getting a pair of sunglasses from Mykita's collaboration with Maison Martin Margiela might be the best way to make sure you don't end up wearing the same shades everyone else does this summer.

German eyewear brand Mykita worked with the avant garde French fashion house to produce two collections that look nothing like your standard pair of sunnies. The Essential line includes a selection of metal frames with reflective lenses, while the Dual line fuses two colors of acetate together to create a frame-on-frame effect.

"The idea with Dual is that you have one shape and you're dividing it into two new identities," said Mykita's creative director Moritz Krüger, who recently walked us through the collection. "This silhouette has been taken away, like a negative footprint out of the other shape."

The Essential line is just as high-concept. All of the shapes, including the triangular aviators that the designer said "look a little bit dangerous," consist solely of the powder-coated metal and frames and the Zeiss glass lenses—no bulky nose pads here.

So how does one pull off such statement-making frames? Krüger admitted that "of course there are certain shapes that fit certain face physiognomies," but said choosing a pair ultimately comes down to what you think looks good. "These things sit in front of your eyes for hours; they're the most prominent screen you have," he said. "It has a lot to do with how want to express your personality."

Feeling dangerous? All the sunglasses will retail for $560, and will be available in Mykita stores and online on April 17.
