See The Space Where Philip Crangi Designed His Coach Collaboration

How the designer's studio gave life to his partnership with the ultra-American brand.

Jewelry designer Philip Crangi's work has always been underpinned by an American design aesthetic, so his new collaboration with Coach, a company that was founded in New York City in the early 1940s, makes total sense.

"For a long time, American design—especially in luxury goods and fashion—took a back seat to the Europeans," he told us when we visited his studio last October. "I think, in the past, there's been a prejudice and an insecurity that no longer applies, and I want my work to reflect that honesty and confidence: American and chic."

The designer's studio, which he calls "an evolving catalog of what's inspiring me at the moment," is filled with brass and leather elements that inform the men's bracelets, belts, and key fobs he made for Coach. For example, he's been collecting stamps bearing the number five since the beginning of his career, and you'll see a five with an arrow shot through it on a brass-and-leather bracelet in this new collection, which also includes nautically inspired wrist bands that are braided like rope.

"I think the Hook & Keeper Bracelet looks as good in the summer at the beach as it does in the winter poking out from the cuff of my fisherman's sweater," he said.

The pieces are available online this week and will be in Coach stores nationwide in May. Prices range from a $128 clip-on keyring to a $198 belt with a plaque-like brass buckle. You can take a look at Crangi's fascinating studio here, and see our favorite pieces from the collaboration below.
