The Real Euro Stars: 5 New Beers From Unexpected Places

A new generation of innovative brewers have emerged in countries known more for vino or vodka than for beer. Inspired by our own craft revolution, nonconformists from Barcelona to Stockholm are winning over fans with inventive IPAs and dessert-worthy porters that look as good as they taste.

Friends Tobias Emil Jensen and Tore Gynther started making beer in their high- school cafeteria. Nine years later, their Copenhagen brewery, translated as "Two Beers," is one of the most adventurous in Denmark, creating everything from peppery Belgian-inspired ales to this potent but sweetly scented brew.

Biochemist turned brewer Leonardo di Vincenzo has been perfecting this IPA with skill worthy of Italy's other, more famous Leonardo. Hops added at the end of the brewing process give it a crisp, balanced flavor made to down with barbecued chicken on a hot summer day.

This imperial IPA is a standout among the tasteless, bathwater-like beers that dominate Sweden's drinking landscape. Brewer Henok Fentie and Karl Grandin, who designs the labels, go heavy on hops but emphasize drinkability over harsh bitterness.

Located in the small Norwegian port town of Stavanger, this "cooperative brewery" is run by American expat Mike Murphy, whose spicy IPA tempers a pungent, piney bitterness with caramel sweetness—worlds away from Ringnes, the country's lager standby.

Spaniards have always reached for the ubiquitous Estrella Damm, but fuller-bodied beers are taking root with the Barcelona-based duo behind Nómada. This silky black beer starts off sweet like a café au lait before giving way to tastes of dark licorice and bitter coffee beans.
