This Week in Fashion: Kelly Slater Joins Kering, McConaughey Auctions His Cowboy Hat

Plus—Urban Outfitters' Williamsburg takeover, Prada's (pretty ambitious) menswear plan, and more.

The week's top stories in fashion news.

  • After 20 years as the face of Quiksilver, surfer Kelly Slater is ditching the pre-teen brand for his own luxury project backed by Kering—the same group that controls Gucci and Alexander McQueen. He said he's eager to combine his loves of "clean living, responsibility, and style." Compostable board shorts? T-shirts spun from organic hemp? Stay tuned. (Business of Fashion)

  • Good news for Prada lovers. The Italian house has announced plans to double its menswear business. And how will they convince so many dudes to shell out for their stuff? With a whole bunch of new stores. The Italian house says it will add 50 dedicated menswear shops to the existing 30 in the next three years. (WSJ)

  • Detroit may be the birthplace of rock n' roll, but it's also the hometown of John Varvatos, who discussed his earliest influence—Iggy Pop and the Stooges—at the 92nd Street Y this week. Varvatos also dished on the KISS runway performance that exploded all over the internet. "If we tried to make it go viral like it did," he said, "we would have f--ked it up." (WWD)

  • This Friday, Urban Outfitters is opening its humongous new store—sorry, we mean Space Ninety 8—on North 6th Street in Williamsburg. Apparently, the store will stock a mix of local goods (think skincare by S.W. Basics and surfboards from Salt Surf) as well as local foodstuffs. Maybe you'll be too busy pawing through local souvenirs to hear the din of the corporate machine. (Instagram)

  • These days, whatever Matthew McConaughey touches turns to solid gold, including his movie props. The cowboy hat he sported in Dallas Buyers Club fetched nearly $13,000 at auction. The actor signed the brim of the hat with the message, "Just keep livin'." Alright, alright, alright (wrong movie but, still). (Complex)
