What kind of week has our good friend Pharrell Williams had? On the one hand, he was photographed wearing a really good new hat. On the other, Iranian police jailed six people for filming themselves dancing to his international hit song Happy.
After the group posted their video, called Happy: We Are From Tehran, on YouTube Tuesday, law enforcement officials in that city identified and detained them for releasing "a vulgar clip which hurt public chastity." (The ladies seen dancing about weren't covered from head to toe, which is mandatory under Iran's strict Islamic law.)
The six were forced to apologize on national television and were released from prison after a 24-hour period. Whether the process was sped up by Pharrell tweeting at Iranian president Hassan Rouhani is unclear.
The music video he made with The Lonely Island for the season finale of SNL, however, didn't get anyone in trouble.
But back to the hat. While no mere cap could replace the Vivienne Westwood topper that has captured so much attention since Pharrell wore it at the Grammys this year, the black woven fedora he was spotted wearing at Japan's Narita International Airport is a smart follow-up act. Look closely and see if you can spot the little blue Adidas logo. The singer announced this spring that he'd be collaborating with the sportswear brand, so this could very well be a first look at the product lineup. Perhaps next week's #PharrellWatch will reveal even more?
