Runway Recall: When Waiters Stormed the Runway at Carven's Pitti Showcase

A runway show, a five-course meal, and a 400-member work of performance art all in one.

In our new series Runway Recall, we revisit some of the greatest moments and best looks from memorable men's fashion shows. In this edition, we're taking a look back at the traditional French waiter's race that happened in the middle of Carven's menswear presentation at Pitti Uomo in 2012.

Carven's creative director Guillaume Henry raised the bar for guest designers at Pitti Uomo—the menswear trade show in Florence, Italy—when he staged a dinner, a live performance, and a fashion show all in one. Instead of putting on a simple runway show, Henry took over a soccer field and treated his guests to a five course meal. While editors and buyers nibbled on antipasti, models started walking out onto the grass—and so did actors cast as servers participating in a traditional waiter's race. (To win one of these races, you have to swiftly carry a loaded tray over a prescribed course without spilling any of the contents.)

A marching band comprised of members of the Royal Italian Army closed the show. All told, some 400 people participated in the performance that Henry said went off without a hitch.

"It was the perfect picture of my dream," he told Fashionista. "It was La Dolce Vita meets la nouvelle vague."

Take a look at the spectacle in the video below.
