White-Tie Rulebreakers Who Looked Great at the Met Gala

White tie? Who needs it?

Because personal style is all about bending the rules—and sometimes breaking them completely—we probably shouldn't have been surprised to see so many guys not wearing white tie at Monday night's Met Gala.

In fact, a handful of men made it seem like the invitation said "it's totally fine if you just wear a dinner jacket" instead of the formal request to attend in "full evening dress and decorations." David Beckham (seen with his wife Victoria at the top), Hugh Jackman, Jay Z, Bryan Cranston, and Frank Ocean (above) all showed up in white jackets. In fact, Givenchy creative director Riccardo Tisci, who made Ocean's tux, sidestepped the white-tie dress code and put on a cream-colored jacket, too.

A few guys even got ultra casual and wore long ties. Seth Meyers, Tommy Matola, and Edward Norton (above, with his wife Shauna Robertson), all looked great, even if their neckwear choices were better suited for a conference room than a white-tie event.

But for many, a little twist on the traditional tuxedo sufficed. Ryan Reynolds wore a velvet smoking jacket and a red bow tie from Gucci. Tom Brady wore an oversized bow tie, and designer Alexander Wang wore a double-breasted black suit and skipped the tie altogether. Andrew Garfield, seen above, donned a gray jacket that looked a lot like what he wore on Saturday Night Live this weekend. But hey, if it ain't broke...
