Let's Talk About FIFA's Ridiculous Investigation Into Neymar's Underwear

FIFA, which has established pretty strict standards for the uniforms of World Cup players, is investigating noted Brazilian soccer stud Neymar for displaying a pair of Speedo brand underwear.

The organization's officials should have their hands full dealing with a grown man who bites other human beings, but they're currently trying to determine whether Neymar purposefully displayed his skivvies after Team Brazil beat Team Cameroon in a match on Monday. The offending undergarments were seen when Neymar took off his jersey to trade with a member of the opposing team, a longstanding soccer ritual. (Frustratingly enough, we couldn't find photos of the shorts anywhere.)

FIFA has a highly regimented list of brand marks that it allows to appear during its games, and Speedo is not one of them. So the big question is whether Neymar showed off the logo as part of some kind of shady product placement deal. The footballer has modeled in the past, but as far as we can tell has never struck a formal deal with the swimsuit maker.

That said, he probably should have been more careful. Just two years ago, UEFA, the European football confederation, fined Team Denmark's Niklas Bendter €100,000 (about $136,000 at current exchange) for wearing a pair of boxer briefs emblazoned with the name of the betting site Paddy Power.

But that was clearly intentional. We sort of doubt that Neymar is actually on the take, but hey—that's what the investigation is for.
