Runway Recall: When Henrik Vibskov Sent His Models Out in Human-Scale Hamster Wheels

There's a rodent joke in here somewhere, we know it.

In this edition of Runway Recall, we revisit the human-size hamster wheels Henrik Vibskov erected for his fall 2009 show.

There was a lot going on in Henrik Vibskov's fall 2009 men's show in Paris: All the models wore stovepipe hats, a stripe of dark face paint, and an oblong ring of metal under their noses, which brought to mind visions of Abraham Lincoln at Burning Man. WWD called the bright and eclectic clothing the designer's "Mad Hatter meets granddad collection." But none of those eccentric elements could distract the audience from the massive black-and-white-striped hamster wheels some of the models strode through as they walked out from backstage.

The wheels, which matched the runway Vibskov created for this show, gave the audience something like a two-screen viewing experience: New looks came down the runway while old ones stuck around for a while on the periphery. It's an effect Vibskov liked so much, he brought the hamster wheels with him when he presented a mixed men's and women's collection in Copenhagen a month later. You can take a look at them in motion in the video below.
