For The Splurge, we ask tastemakers to tell us about their most recent—and most extravagant—purchases.
Osklen founder and creative director Oskar Metsavaht is an avid traveler, and he's traveled all over the globe for both business and pleasure. While everyone else was busy watching the World Cup in Rio, the Brazilian designer told us about his recent escape to Iceland.
Where was your last big trip and what brought you there?
I went to Iceland to scout locations for a feature film that I am collaborating on called Soundtrack.
Had you ever been to Iceland before? What was it like?
No, it was my first trip there. I have been to the Andes, Himalayas, Alaska, Patagonia, and the Alps, but never a place as beautiful as Iceland. It's a region of the planet that is volcanically and geologically active. This is a great environment for filming. The light is dramatic and there are no signs of civilization in sight.
For tourists, Reykjavik is a very cool city, with good restaurants and a vibrant art scene. For a quick trip side trip from Reykjavik, take a 45 minute flight to the north to see the Lagjökull Glacier. It's super.
Did you have any memorable meals?
The meals are just like the Nordic countries of Europe, offering great seafood, great fish. I suggest the cod in Icelandic style at restaurants such as KOL in Reykjavik.
