Three Cocktail Trends Spotted at the Manhattan Cocktail Classic

Endurance junkies have Ironmans, fried Oreo connoisseurs have the Iowa State Fair, and those of us who just plain like to drink have the Manhattan Cocktail Classic (MCC) Gala, a black-tie event whose sole purpose is to sip, swill, and savor as many of the 25,000 cocktails being doled out as possible. (If Gatsby existed in modern day New York, you'd find him here.)

The annual event is also where cocktail trends come alive—if people line up for it at the Cocktail Classic, it's probably coming soon to a bar near you. Here are three trends we spotted at this year's bash, which took place, luxuriously enough, at the New York Public Library last weekend.

Rules of Style: Sunglasses Designer Garrett Leight

Garrett Leight, the son of Oliver People's Larry and Cindy Leight, founded his eponymous line of sunglasses, Garrett Leight California Optical (GLCO), in his hometown of Venice Beach in 2010. Continuing his parents' time-honored commitment to craftsmanship, all GLCO frames are sourced from premium materials. Their plastics, for example, are a custom-made cellulose acetate handmade at the renowned Mazzuchelli factory in Italy or else sourced from vintage Japanese acetate.

The brand just released the "Venezia," (below) a beautiful new frame from its Spring/Summer 2013 collection with a retro clip-on option (now available at its new Los Angeles flagship). Here, Leight reveals his go-to outfit, how to shop for sunglasses that fit your face, and why you should never sport a mustache.

Move Over Kale: Why Major Chefs Are Adding Collard Greens To Their Menus

Kale has been the "it" green for the last few years, but now it has some competition. Collard greens, another leafy vegetable and a longtime Southern staple, are becoming a favorite among culinary all-stars. Hugh Acheson, owner of Five and Ten and The National in Georgia, declared collards "the new kale" during a guest-judging appearance on Top Chef. And Michael Ferraro, executive chef at Delicatessen in New York City and a former competitor on Iron Chef America, is also a fan. "Collard greens are a very classic comfort food ingredient, but they're making a comeback in a big way with new, lighter preparations," he says. "They're not just for fried chicken anymore."

Lots of guys hit their 20s or 30s only to find that their locks aren't so luscious anymore. You can blame it on genetics though it's still not entirely clear if your mother's side of the family deserves more of the blame. So what are your options when your follicles start to fail you?

Foreign Correspondent: Footwear Designer Christian Kimber's Stylish Guide to Melbourne

Two years ago, British-born men's accessories designer Christian Kimber moved from London to Melbourne, where he founded an eponymous line of footwear. His signature suede loafers and chukka boots—shoes that look equally at home with beat-up denim and bespoke tailoring—are generally sold at local shops but can be made-to-order. From his initial concepts for a show (he uses watercolors to sketch out his ideas) to designing the brand's logo (the burnt orange color was inspired by the bright Australian mud) to managing the business, Christian oversees every stage himself.

Here, he talks about menswear in Melbourne, his five favorite stores, and what to see and do down under.

Home Interior Design: Architect Daniel Libeskind's Angular Weekend Getaway

Location: Connecticut, USA

Size: 2,000 square feet

Architect and Interior Designer: Studio Daniel Libeskind

Eighteen copper panels slice through an open Connecticut sky in the 18.36.54 house by Daniel Libeskind, the master plan architect of the new World Trade Center site in New York. Best known for his public buildings, including the Jewish Museum in Berlin and MGM Mirage's City Center in Las Vegas, this deconstructivist weekend home was Libeskind's first private commission. Named for the 18 planes, 36 points, and 54 lines spiraling around an open living plan, Libeskind likened the 18.36.54 house to "a musical composition...[It is] very abstract, very refined, very perfect, geometrically," he explained in an interview with Architectural Record.

Not-So-Happy Father's Days: Common Themes in Two New Daddy Memoirs

As attitudes towards gendered parenting roles change, so do the books written about them—as exemplified by two new paternal comic memoirs out this week: Someone Could Get Hurt by Drew Magary (Gotham, $25) and Dad or Alive by Adrian Kulp (New American Library, $15). Both feature fathers far more involved in the daily life of their children than parents ever were in the 20th century, but some things always stay the same—like the kind of jokes good old dad used to make.
