Q: In hindsight, does the Gary Condit coverage seem irrelevant and trivial?
A: Irrelevant, trivial. I never agreed with the CBS Evening News producer who said we won't do any Condit, because Condit is a legitimate story. Around here, we argue as much as anybody else about what has merit and what doesn't. I'm pleased to say that after some bloody battles, we gave Condit far less than anybody else did. But sometimes stories can actually drag you along against your will, and you can get trapped-as I thought CBS got trapped-into not doing a story. It isn't that the Condit story is utterly trivial, it was that we couldn't stop doing it. With the media, it's like getting a bite and you can't stop scratching it. It's sick in some way.
