Christian Bale has always been intense. He got his big start at 13, playing a British boy struggling to survive Japanese occupation in World War IIera China in Steven Spielberg's Empire of the Sun. Bale went on to shine as perversely appealing antiheroes in movies like American Psycho and The Machinist before leading (along with Heath Ledger) The Dark Knight to a worldwide gross of $1 billion.
