Robert Mapplethorpe, Revisited

Two new populist takes on the controversial photographer.

May 2011 Issue

Michael on Robert Mapplethorpe
Age: 45
Hometown: Kennesaw, Georgia
Occupation: Pilot

Photo: Sonia and Tracy, 1988

Why this photo?
"Even though the subjects are real people, through the use of makeup, lighting, and the facial expressions, they look to be a sculpted statue."

What does it mean to you?
"I guess what I was thinking while looking at this image was how her left hand is behind her neck to show her tenderness, while her right is on her arm to show that she's in control."

Has this project changed your opinion of Mapplethorpe?
"I had never heard of Robert Mapplethorpe. . . . I have always tried to be open-minded and enjoyed all of the works, even though I may not have understood some of the reason or meaning."
