Robert Mapplethorpe, Revisited

Two new populist takes on the controversial photographer.

May 2011 Issue

Clare on Robert Mapplethorpe
Age: 62
Hometown: Melvin, Michigan
Occupation: Retired

Photo: Embrace, 1982

Why this photo?
"It typifies the mystery and tragedy of human relationships. I see comfort, hope, and hopelessness all in one."

What does it mean to you?
"I grew up in the city of Dearborn, Michigan, which was made up of all white people until the 1970s. There was prejudice against all races, religions, and sexual orientations that were different from 'the norm.' Over the years I have gotten to know many people of other races, religions, and sexual orientations. . . . My question is this: Why is there still division between the races, religions, and sexual orientations? This image is a poignant reminder of how far we've come and yet how far we still have to go."
