Kick-Ass star Nic Cage has had some huge ups and downs in his life. Here are six lessons you can glean from his mistakes—and what to steal from his successes.

Cage Don't: Relying on bad advice. Cage is currently suing his former financial adviser for, according to Cage, leading him "down a path toward financial ruin." And what a path it is. He owes the IRS over $6 million. Two homes are being foreclosed, he's shedding other properties from Vegas to Los Angeles, and an ex-girlfriend is suing him.

You Do: Even if you're living within your means, make sure you know what's going on with your accounts. "Very few people would take a physician's or lawyer's advice without any inquiry," says Gary Schatsky, a financial adviser and president of objectiveadvice.com. "You should be asked for your opinion—not of where the market is going, but how you feel about different kinds of risk," he adds. You should also be sure to work with someone who's focused on making you money rather than making it for himself. "You want someone impartial who's not working on commission or a referral fee," Schatsky says.
