Maputo, Mozambique
The New Cape Town: Southern Africa's Hottest Scene
The fast-growing, Portuguese-inflected capital city of Mozambique is sexier (and safer) than almost any other urban destination in Africa. Euro expats mingle with fashionable locals along the boardwalk, Avenida Marginal, which has a surfing beach and the town's best beach-shack bar, Costa do Sol. The local version of the 21 Club is Clube Naval de Maputo, which serves perfect piri-piri prawns, while the hottest bar is Kampfumo Jazz Café. After sunset, check out Coconuts, where nightly parties end well after dawn, when the crowds crawl back to the luxe suites of the Polana Serena Hotel.
