The True Story of Seven Strangers—and You

When The Real World made its debut 16 years ago, nobody knew that it would lead to today's glut of reality programming. But as the series enters its 20th season, it's begun to look like something we never expected it to be: an American classic.

May 21, 1992 Set in New York, The Real World—“The true story of seven strangers picked to live in a loft and have their lives taped to find out what happens when people stop being polite…and start getting real”—makes its debut on MTV.

July 29, 1993 David, of The Real World: Los Angeles, drags a partially dressed Tami, wrapped in her covers, down the hall in what seems like harmless horseplay. But Beth S. rallies the female roommates to demand David be kicked out of the house—and he’s sent packing. Somewhere, Mark Burnett and Jeff Probst get an idea.
