YOU'VE SEEN HIM … In Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day, with Amy Adams and Frances McDormand.

UP NEXT: He plays a jockey in HBO's seedy-side-of-horse-racing drama, Luck, opposite Dustin Hoffman and Nick Nolte.

INTO THE BACKWOODS: "I'm from England, but on the show I'm from Louisiana. I went down to Opelousas—that's where I decided my character was from—and met this family and was driven around this plantation with rice fields and crawfish fields. It was like being in a video game. There were these murky waters, and the guy was like, 'That's where I hit the alligator with the spade. He kept comin', so I had to hit him again.' I was like, 'Okay … we're in the middle of nowhere, and this is really scary.'"

A MAN AMONG MENTORS: "Nick Nolte, to me, represents a male archetype that doesn't exist anymore. Everyone now is super-groomed and publicized. Nick is that guy who could really turn on you—and you'd be in trouble. A lot of actors are playing that, trying to be that, rather than just being it."

Next stars: Max Thieriot, Miles Teller, and Diego Boneta.
