AGE: 34

HOMETOWN: Clifton Park, New York

BACKSTORY: Studied film at Syracuse University intending to become a director, until a professor steered him toward acting.

WHERE YOU'VE SEEN HIM BEFORE: As Laura Linney's overly involved oncologist on HBO's The Big C; as another doctor (and cougar bait) on ABC Family's The Secret Life of the American Teenager; as club manager Brendan on TBS's My Boys.

WHERE YOU'LL SEE HIM NEXT: As Dan Egan, a Machiavellian, social-climbing political operative on Veep, HBO's new satirical sitcom about an overwhelmed vice president (played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus). "The casting director said, 'This character is such an asshole, but he's still gotta be likable—I couldn't think of anybody else.' It was kind of a backhanded compliment."

WHAT IT'S LIKE TO PLAY A JERK: "There's a lot of stuff that comes out of Dan's mouth where it's like, 'Holy shit, I can't believe I just said that.' I look around and want to apologize to everybody."

HOW HE RESEARCHED THE ROLE: "I interviewed a friend of mine who's been on Capitol Hill for 10 years and asked him, 'What's it been like?' He said, 'It's a race to see who's gonna set themselves on fire.'"
