Holiday Gift Guide 2012: Books

Heavy, tangible, and unencumbered by electricity, real-world books have enduring appeal: Books are art, books can be left in the bathroom for future reading, and great books never become obsolete. Below, we've identified new works for every type of personality.

For Heartbroken Staggering Geniuses
Building Stories, by Chris Ware

This graphic novel from the brilliant cartoonist behind Jimmy Corrigan comes stuffed inside a board-game-size box as a jumble of 14 parts—pamphlets, books, posters, etc. The stories can be read in any order and together tell the heartbreakingly sad (and breathtakingly ambitious) story of a one-legged Chicago woman's struggles with love, motherhood, and failed aspirations. It is possibly both the novel and design object of the year.
