The Vietnam War controversy that would plague John Kerry's 2004 presidential run started in 1971, when, as a member of Vietnam Veterans Against the War, he became the first soldier to testify before Congress about the war. Speaking out at antiwar rallies and on news programs like Meet the Press, he established himself as a skilled orator—and paved the way to his first run for Congress, in 1972.
