Rotterdam Market Hall
When a new market was proposed for the city's Laurens Quarter neighborhood, officials insisted it be covered, in accordance with the country's hygiene laws. So the hotshot Dutch firm MVRDV upped the ante with its concept for a giant, LED-covered arch. The structure—scheduled to open in 2014—will be home to an underground AH Supermarket and 228 apartments overlooking 100 open-air food stalls.
