Best Department Store
Selfridges (pictured, above)
Imagine someone visited all the top menswear brands in London, picked out the best items from each, then put them together on one spacious, well-designed floor of a building. This is the Selfridges menswear floor. Vivienne Westwood, Tom Ford, Oliver Sweeney, Alexander McQueen, Hackett, Hunter, Mulberry—the styles are diverse but carefully chosen. The customer service is excellent too; the staff can effortlessly communicate its encyclopedic knowledge of the store and its lines. 400 Oxford St., London; 171-318-3693 or 0800-123-400

Best Sale Shop for Men
Paul Smith Sale Shop
Go to London and come back with some choice Paul Smith accessories? That would be ideal. Our tip: Visit the sale shop. What you'll see: quirky designs from one of the U.K.'s most consistently stylish men's clothes designers. The sale shop sells off last season's designs, at around one-third to one-half of the original price. The first floor sells casualwear such as shirts, shoes, and T-shirts; the second floor, up a hard-to-spot stairway, is where the real bargains are found—beautiful suits and more-expensive items marked way down. 23 Avery Row, Mayfair, London; 020-7493-1287

Best Men's Vintage Clothing Shop
Beyond Retro (left)
Brick Lane Market in East London is famous for its tatt shops, but this one is worth seeking out for its particularly wide range of vintage clothing: secondhand smoking jackets, military regalia, jodhpurs, safari hats, vintage airline bags, and, of course, a vast number of fashion risks gone wrong. The Cheshire Street branch is the biggest and the best. 110-112 Cheshire St., London; 020-7613-3636

Best Men's Leather Jackets
This iconic British brand has been making motorcycle gear since 1924. But for the past few years, it's been reinventing itself as a fashion brand. The Conduit Street flagship store, just off Oxford Circus in Mayfair, is the perfect place to peruse the company's chic but masculine range of coats and jackets. Note: It's moving in fall 2012 to 135-137 New Bond Street (also in Mayfair). 12-13 Conduit St., Mayfair, London; 020-7495-5897

Best Specialty Tailor for Men
British Invisible Mending Service
You're in London and you just realized your suit was attacked by moths? Or that a favorite wool coat has a burn hole from a careless cigarette indulgence? This woven-fabrics specialist shop in Marylebone, north of Oxford Street, is the place to bring those much-loved, expensive items. Note that the repairs can be labor-intensive, so it's not cheap—and not all types of fabrics can be repaired. 32 Thayer St., London; 020-7487-4292
