Super-Stylish Superheroes of Summer examines the comic (and not-so-comic) fashion of Batman, Spider-Man, and other costumed crime fighters.

July 19, 2012

With the blockbuster success of the The Avengers and The Amazing Spider-Man—and the unavoidable hubbub surrounding The Dark Knight Rises—this is the unofficial summer of the superhero. We looked at the fashion of six major players—alter egos included—and gleaned style advice from each.

Latest Movie: Marvel Comics reinvented Spider-Man as a skateboarding high-school senior set to uncover his parents' secrets in the new film.
The Alter-Ego Look: Pre-bite, Peter Parker sported a disheveled hairdo and oft-broken eyeglasses. The transformation into Spider-Man made him only marginally cooler—he still sheds his Spidey suit for hooded sweatshirts in unflattering hues.
The Superhero Look: After the infamous radioactive spider bite, he sewed a webbed red-and-blue unitard, complete with mechanical web-fluid shooters.
Fashion Takeaway: The latest costume added serious texture, but still omits a front-facing fly for bathroom emergencies.
