8 Designers Who Make Uniforms Look Good

Fashion kings like Michael Kors and Richard Chai show you how to pull off sartorial monogamy.

October 8, 2010

Since designers earn a living in the fashion industry, it makes sense that some of them treat clothes as uniforms, wearing variations of the same outfit day in and day out. But there's nothing wrong with knowing exactly what you want to put on in the morning because it's pretty much the same thing you wore the day before. It's a sartorial decision that could both make your life easier and help you look better. Just be sure you choose something that fits and flatters you—and don't let your uniform get ratty. "I hate when people say, 'Oh, you'll have that for 20 years,'" Tom Ford told Details. "Even if I'm wearing a blue cashmere sweater 20 years from now, I want it to be a fresh, new one." Here's who's doing it right.

Designer: Richard Chai
Uniform: Khakis
Why It Works: Although Chai's khakis are baggy instead of slim-cut, he keeps them from looking sloppy by adding a crisp jacket or a well-tied scarf.
