DISTRESS YOUR DENIM YOURSELF
Jeans are supposed to be sexy. They're supposed to give you an attitude—they're not supposed to just sit up above your belly button and pile down on the floor. I like jeans that are not so distressed and are a little bit stiffer, the kind that you give the authentic lived-in look, rather than looking pre-lived-in.
DON'T JUST WEAR COLOR—CONTRAST IT
Always put color next to a neutral. It's one thing if you're trying to make a point about color—then of course you might combine lots of different ones—but in real life it's important to get a neutral background with a bright color. Usually color looks best if it suits your eye color.
THE POWER OF A GOOD BAG
A bag is such a functional thing. You have to look at your life—do you walk around with an iPad, a wallet, files?—and then work backward. The simpler the better. I just made myself a black soft leather tote in deerskin with a little tubular handle, and it's really beautiful. But it's dead simple.
MIX IN ONE PIECE OF
If it's all getting a little bit too stiff or you feel like you can't move, then take off that crazy fitted jacket with your tailored pants and just throw on a leather jacket. I don't love it when fashion becomes really uptight, when it all becomes kind of studied. I love a trench coat because it just relaxes everything a little bit.
THINK "MOOD" WHEN
DESIGNING A HOME
Architecture is a huge part of my every day. I've always had some sort of project going on for the past 15 to 20 years. It's not dissimilar to clothes and fashion—you have to understand the way you want to exist within the building. Do you want your personal space to feel relaxed and comfortable, or do you want it modern and clean? If you're going modern and clean, you'd better get really good storage, and if you live in a space that is north-facing, you want your walls to be a bit paler so you can get more light into it.
TRY OUT MULTIPLE SCENTS
It's like choosing clothes. It has to suit you, and I think the best way to do that is to try things. For guys, sometimes that's less natural, to experiment. But prep is important; your scent says a lot about you. I like classicism and authenticity, which is why I wanted my new scent, Brit Rhythm, to feel leathery and woody, but not too uptight. Most of us have a good sense of what we like, but bring your girlfriend or partner with you to help.
A FEW OF BAILEY'S FAVORITE THINGS
Health Drink: "It's called green something. It's pretty gross, but apparently it's good for you: apple juice and spinach and all green vegetables and fruits. I'm just not very good at eating greens, so I basically try to do it now all in one go in the morning."
Restaurant: "In London, there's a restaurant on Kensington High Street that just opened up called Acciuga. They're doing incredible pastas, and it's just really authentic."
Music: "I'm loving Tom Odell right now and a new guy named George Ezra. And I'm always listening to Adele."
TV Show: "I just finished [the Danish political drama] Borgen, and I'm desperate for the third series."
Vacation Spot: "Anywhere in Umbria, Italy. It's still a little bit rustic, and it's just very unspoiled. It has open countryside and wonderful farms, and I just find it incredibly peaceful."
