Studio Visit: Todd Snyder

The former architecture student may have only recently launched his first menswear collection (for Fall 2011), but already Todd Snyder has established himself as an industry mainstay, creating wardrobe classics with expertly crafted details. We stopped by his studio to talk about how the landscape of menswear is changing, the challenges he faced while launching his line, and why, when it comes to certain things, size really does matter.

Menswear designer Todd Snyder believes a winning wardrobe is rooted in the basics, which he manages to make look and feel anything but. In his collaboration with the sportswear brand Champion, Snyder added a small chest pocket to a classic sweatshirt, elevating it from humble to stylish and grabbing the attention of trendsetting men (not to mention women) and topping holiday wish lists across the country.

Subtle details like this have become the emblem of Snyder's work, and a key reason guys turn to him season after season to help them reimagine the building blocks of their wardrobes.

We stopped by his Manhattan studio to take a peek into his process. Click "enlarge" to view the slideshow of our studio tour and interview with Snyder.

How did you get your start in menswear?

I'm from Iowa, and there weren't a lot of us coming [to New York], so I knew I needed to prove myself. I worked as an intern at Ralph Lauren to get my foot in the door and did a little bit of everything. I started wearing some of the shirts I made at home, and the design director took notice. My mother is an artist and interior designer, and my father was an engineer, so I was always into art and building things.
