Studio Visit: Patrik Ervell

The CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund-nominated menswear designer takes us behind his designs and explains how Northern California and Sweden are actually very similar, the surprising store he frequents for inspiration, and why hanging out next to an active volcano is thoroughly relaxing.

Some people are born knowing they want to be designers. Then there's Patrik Ervell. Raised in California by Swedish parents, Ervell studied art history and political science at Berkeley, passed the Foreign Service exam (then decided diplomacy wasn't for him), moved to New York, and worked as an editor at V Magazine before discovering his true calling in fashion design.

While Ervell's sporty outerwear is responsible for much of the brand's critical buzz, all of his garments exude a quietly cool, intellectual, and minimalistic vibe that give his collections cohesion from season to season.

How did you get your start in menswear?
I moved to New York a week after finishing school [at Berkeley]. Then I was at an intern at V Magazine in the summer of 2001. I ended up working there as an associate editor. Clothes wise, Humberto [Leon] and Carol [Lim]—they were classmates at Berkeley—opened Opening Ceremony, and I started making some things for their store in a very casual way. I started with printed T-shirts. It was as basic as you can get.
