Studio Visit: Patrik Ervell

The CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund-nominated menswear designer takes us behind his designs and explains how Northern California and Sweden are actually very similar, the surprising store he frequents for inspiration, and why hanging out next to an active volcano is thoroughly relaxing.

Some people are born knowing they want to be designers. Then there's Patrik Ervell. Raised in California by Swedish parents, Ervell studied art history and political science at Berkeley, passed the Foreign Service exam (then decided diplomacy wasn't for him), moved to New York, and worked as an editor at V Magazine before discovering his true calling in fashion design.

While Ervell's sporty outerwear is responsible for much of the brand's critical buzz, all of his garments exude a quietly cool, intellectual, and minimalistic vibe that give his collections cohesion from season to season.

How does your unique background inform your work?
Coming from Northern California and also being Swedish, I think those two things are actually closely related. They have very similar aesthetics. They're both cultures that frown upon ostentatiousness and display. They admire simplicity and form and function, and those are things that definitely inform what I do. People always say that my clothes have a Scandinavian feel because there's simplicity, a functional element, and the specific use of color, too.
