Studio Visit With Jack Spade's Discerning Design Director Todd Magill

As Jack Spade evolves into a more tailored, more serious, and, frankly, more interesting menswear label, we meet the man who's been key to redefining the brand.

At Jack Spade's first Fashion Week presentation last February, design director Todd Magill proved a point. The brand, already established for its bags and accessories, was ready to spread its wings and become a serious contender in the world of menswear. With the help of tailoring and luxe materials, Magill rendered basics like sweatpants in sleeker silhouettes cut from rich, buttery suede.

As one might imagine, overseeing the design for all the brand's categories requires plenty of late nights and early mornings, but Magill is cool with the commitment. In fact, he thinks about his customer all the time. "It's inspiring to have it on my mind," he says.

Describe the Jack Spade guy.
He's definitely an urban guy. He's taking on the streets of the city, so he needs something utilitarian. He also wants to go to the bar and dinner looking put together, but he doesn't want his clothes to lead. He's not a peacock. He's modern, American. There's familiarity in what he wears.
