Studio Visit: J.Crew's Menswear Director Frank Muytjens

Meet the man who's played a pivotal role in shifting J.Crew's reputation from bland to bankable.

There's no reason why menswear can't be both high-quality and affordable. Or at least that's what J.Crew's menswear director, Frank Muytjens, thinks. Take, for example, his famed Ludlow suit. Launched in 2008, it became an instant sensation with its irresistible combination of flattering fit—"It's not too slim or skinny, just right," says Muytjens—and equally flattering price (under $1,000).

While his work is grounded in classic, wardrobe-building staples, Muytjens gets a kick out of seeing how everyday men make his basics look anything but. "I love spotting our designs on the street, and seeing what a guy does to make them uniquely his own."

How did you get your start in design?
I was first interested in becoming a fashion illustrator. When I went to college (in Holland), I had to take mandatory fashion-design classes. That's when I found out that I really liked design. This was in the early 1980s, when graphic design, album-cover art, and fashion were all intertwined. So it was a seamless transition from trying to become a fashion illustrator to becoming a fashion designer.
