Studio Visit: Steven Alan

"Producing things is very rewarding to me. I like being able to visit factories, sell the garments, and meet the end user. I like the whole process."

Like some of the best inventions, Steven Alan's signature Reverse Seam Shirt was the culmination of deliberation and accident. While the reverse French seams and narrow placket were purely intentional, the twisted placket, on the other hand, was happenstance. The result? A button down that's become the building block of many urban closets, and a modern classic.

Alan's deep appreciation of the most minute details, coupled with his keen understanding of how most men shop—"you can't go too far from what men feel comfortable wearing, so you can just push a very little bit"—has helped him create clothes that feel classic yet fresh, and in his words, "just easy."

How do you unwind?
I like spending time with my family. But if no one's in town and I have absolutely nothing to do, I'll go to a sauna and get a massage and get pampered. There's a place in New Jersey called Kings Sauna that I really like.
