For carmakers fighting to get a leg-up on the competition, collaboration is the counterintuitive key to success. And while it may make for some strange bedfellows (VW and Bugatti, anyone?), it can also result in striking offspring with the best qualities of both parents.

The quintessential car for "off-roading" on the cobblestones of SoHo has been significantly scaled back—there's even a two-door version. And while its smoothed-out looks are polarizing, the Evoque is the lightest, most fuel-efficient Range Rover ever—thanks in part to an engine based on Ford's 2.0-liter, 240-hp EcoBoost (the same as in the Explorer).
