Primitive forms and an interest in handmade works dominated 2013's Milan Design Week. This year designers from around the world showcased objects that emphasize weighty yet simple geometries, with muted palettes and a heightened awareness of texture and materiality. Rough finishes, natural materials, and aged patinas highlighted the hand of the craftsman—even in pieces that are manufactured industrially. The austerity of form was balanced by bright colors and Byzantine patterning—adding a bit of fun to an otherwise conservative showing.
