From Richard Prince's Barracuda hoods to Damien Hirst's dotted Mini Cooper, the automobile has long been ripe material for artists. But contemporary painter and unabashed gearhead Richard Phillips wants his car sculptures to drive as well as they look. "We're beyond splashing paint on cars and calling it art," says Phillips, who rebuilt a 1972 Dodge Charger for Art Basel last year and has retrofitted a 2011 Porsche Cayman S to exhibit this spring. Here, we look back at some seminal pieces of automotive sculpture that fast-tracked the genre.
