Last night the Council of Fashion Designers of America released the full list of CFDA Award nominees and honorees, many of whom have been sharing their rules of style with Details for years. Here, we bring you their best advice and add up how many awards they've already taken home in years past.
Menswear Designer of the Year: Public School's Maxwell Osborne and Dao-Yi Chow (above), Rag & Bone's Marcus Wainwright and David Neville, and Thom Browne.
Swarovski Award for Menswear (for best up-and-coming talent): Tim Coppens, Todd Snyder, and Hood by Air's Shayne Oliver.
Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award: Tom Ford
International Award: Raf Simons
Public School on creativity: "Never stop developing your point of view. Protect it with all you have because it's all you have."
Todd Snyder on haircuts: "Visit your barber at least once a month. A good haircut makes it that much easier to always look your best and cuts down on getting ready in the morning."
Rag & Bone on what to invest in: "Shoes and outerwear make a lasting impression—never scrimp on these."
Tim Coppens on teamwork: "To me, the people I work with aren't just people I hire, give budgets to, and expect things from. They're friends. I know how to identify those people and their strengths and to build something with them. Each relationship is fitting to the brand."
Thom Browne on women: "Men don't know enough about being courteous toward women. You should get into a cab before a woman so she doesn't have to slide across the seat. And you should always go first into a revolving door so she doesn't have to push—unless it's moving, then let her go first."
Tom Ford on maintenance: "If you're careful not to overuse Botox, then yes, why shouldn't you use it? A little bit of it between the brows can make you look less stern and more approachable. Who needs to frown, anyway?"
The Repeat Offenders
This year marks the first time Dior's creative director Raf Simons (who also runs his own eponymous label ) and Shayne Oliver have been recognized by the CFDA. But the other nominees have been on this stage before.
Tom Ford has racked up five awards, for everything from womenswear, menswear, and accessories. Thom Browne was crowned Menswear Designer of the Year in 2006 and again in 2013. Public School beat fellow nominees Todd Snyder and Tim Coppens for the Swarovski Award for Menswear last year. Rag & Bone won the the Swarovski Award for Menswear in 2007, and in 2010 were crowned Menswear Designers of the Year.
