One of my all-time favorite pieces of clothing is an olive-green field jacket I picked up ages ago. It's always in heavy rotation in my wardrobe, but it's at this time of year specifically that I find myself reaching for it over and over again. With the temperature fluctuating 20+ degrees on any given day, and the weatherman unable to say whether it will rain (it will), a sturdy but light jacket is essential.
Enter the M-65. Inspired by the military-style field jacket, it's the perfect intersection of rugged and cool in the Venn diagram of style. Effortless and handsome, it has an iconic shape that works on nearly every body type. Here are a few of my favorites from the spring 2012 fashion shows.

PICTURED ABOVE: Dries Van Noten always makes interesting fabric choices, and his take on the M-65 jacket is no exception. I love the slightly beaten effect on the dark navy cotton.
Alexandre Mattiussi's Ami collection is quite the hit at the Details offices. Launched just last fall, it's a decidedly preppy take on classic French style and the perfect embodiment of that effortless Parisian look that is anything but effortless to achieve.
Balmain has become well known for producing incredible versions of iconic menswear items each season; this khaki jacket from designer Olivier Rousteing's debut outing for the storied house continues that tradition quite nicely.
