Knowing that people are never happier than when they're watching wild animals fight, the BBC has just released some footage of fresh mammal-on-mammal action. The "humpback whale heat run"—in which 40-metric-ton males compete for the attention of even larger females—has never been filmed in its entirety before. When the males jostle "for access" to the female, they're aren't playin', fool: some of them have been known to die in the battle.
This got us thinking about animals beating up on other animals. Of course, we're familiar with impressive and majestic predators like the big cats, but we're less aware of other animals with killer instincts, including some that have you thinking, well, that they're cute—right up until the moment they tear your buttocks off and start eating them in front of you. Check out these chimps hunting monkeys with the ruthlessness of a Serbian death squad:
You've got to admit that those killer chimps make a great team. It's hard to imagine coming out on the winning side against them. But while cuddly critters might terrify us unexpectedly, there are plenty of animals we fear primarily because of their appearance:
Asian giant hornets
