Okay, I admit it: My idea of cooking typically involves someone else cooking for me. It's not that I don't appreciate the culinary arts. It's just that when I look at the faces of those forced to eat what I've prepared, I feel like a medical intern delivering his first spinal tap.

That said, I am a deft hand at chopping. I believe a man should know how to handle a knife--and not just in a Daniel Craig sort of way. The challenge of slicing a clove of garlic so thin it would take a physicist to determine whether it's got two or three dimensions is a challenge we should all embrace.

But first, we'll need the right implements. I prefer simple, hand-crafted tools over fancy gadgets, which always remind me of Ronco infomercials. Here are a few standouts:


Here's a peek at one of my prototypes. Like most urbanites, my weekly menu consists of food from all cultures, but I've always been bothered by the fact that there isn't any cutlery out there that incorporates all cuisines. So I decided to make my own.


This is beautiful, extraordinarily functional design. The dowel handle provides a secure grip, reminding us that cookware is ultimately another kind of tool.
