Evan Yurman on What Every Guy Should Know About Pulling Off Jewelry

Forget about statement jewelry. David Yurman is going after statement retail. Its new flagship, a converted town house on Madison Avenue at 63rd Street in Manhattan, has more metals than a periodic table, and a newly-christened floor dedicated to the guys. In addition to the usual stuff—black diamond dog tags, intricately carved silver rings, and leather rope bracelets, you can pick up a carved silver buckle and sip on a cocktail while someone fits it to your belt. Details caught up with Evan Yurman, son of David and director of men's jewelry, timepieces, and couture, and asked him what men need to know about jewels.

1. A mistake men often make is that they wear too many pieces of jewelry at once. Pick one or two items that work together, like a beaded bracelet and watch—they're enough of a statement for one day.

2. Buy something that is timeless, like an ID bracelet or a signet ring. Either one can be incorporated into your daily life with ease. And every man should own one quality timepiece—it's an investment.

3. You can and should mix metals. You don't have to wear all silver or all gold.

4. A good way to get into jewelry is to start with subtle necklaces or chains, which have become more popular for men. In our collections, we look to incorporate interesting textures and exotic materials like sea urchin, rhino, and lapis that give the pieces a masculine edge.

5. More and more men are also wearing rings other than wedding bands. Pieces with distinctive elements, like our Royal Cord rings, can be worn simply and without much thought.

6. Personally, I like our Black Diamond Phantom Pave Dog Tag—it immediately adds something extra to a classic T-shirt and jeans. With rings, my favorites are the Petrvs Scarab ring and Three-Sided Waves ring.
