Filson Mackinaw Cruiser, new.

Filson's Mackinaw Cruiser has been around since 1914 and is, to this day, made in the United States from mackinaw wool, which was used to construct jackets for the British Army during of the War of 1812. It is the jacket that spawned a thousand urban lumberjacks, and, thus, the jacket that spawned a thousand imitations, from brands as old as L.L. Bean and Woolrich to modern-day heritage wet dreams like Engineered Garments and Post Overalls.

No surprise, then: Buying one of these jackets new is not cheap. (Cough, American manufacturing, cough.) What's a man with a beard and a pair of Red Wings to do?

Turn to eBay, which is not only your friend but also your style wingman. It wants to hook you up with discounted swag, and all it asks is that you use its search bar [or browse with the handy left rail]. The key is knowing your size—bust out that measuring tape if you have to.

That and persistence is all it takes. If you don't find what you're looking for right away, check back in a week. Turnover in the eBay world occurs every six or seven days—it's a stock that's constantly replenishing. The question is not if you'll strike gold, it's when.
