Just Stop: Wearing Skinny Jeans

Fashion director Matthew Marden takes issue with the popularity of skinny jeans.

In the Just Stop series, Details fashion director Matthew Marden identifies abominations in men's fashion. This week he has a major issue with skinny jeans.

Let me start by saying that Joey Ramone had amazing style and Hedi Slimane is a genius. I mention them because they are two strong examples of guys who do slim jeans justice. (Notice I said slim.) They are both proponents of denim with a very narrow, straight leg. Narrow and straight fits are good, but skinny? Never.

Jeans that hug your calf muscles are not attractive. Simply put: If they hug your calves, then they also hug everything else, and I don't need to see that. No one does. Jeggings are for girls. Always opt for a straight leg. It's more flattering, and it gives a clean silhouette, even if the denim is distressed. Tapered means tight, so tread lightly. And while we're at it, boot-cuts are for cowboys only, so stay away from those, too. Unless, of course, you are a cowboy.
