In this series, Details' market director Matthew Marden identifies egregious trends in men's fashion. This week, he's got beef with your shades.

This style has been around for awhile, but really became popular when Tom Cruise wore a pair in Mission Impossible 2. Unlike the aviators from his Top Gun days, these are really unflattering. I have yet to see anyone look really good in them, probably because they fit so snugly on the face, almost like swimming goggles—which no one looks good in. (Sorry Michael, Ryan, et al).
I guess they must come in handy in some type of sporty activity where you need to shade your eyes from the glare of the sun, i.e., biking, running, saving the world from evildoers. However, this does not mean you need to wear them on your way to work or to lunch on a Saturday afternoon. The bottom line is that wrap-around sunglasses do not make you look like Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible. They make you look like a tool.
When it comes to sunglasses, always opt for a classic style, like an aviator or wayfarer, which look good on virtually all face shapes. Remember, you want your sunglasses to complement your look, not detract from it.
