Microwave ovens. ATMs. Duct Tape. What do they all have in common? They're among the greatest manventions of the modern age featured in ManVentions: Inventions Men Can't Live Without by Bobby Mercer. Peppered with "Man-Dates" (important moments in history) and "Man-Tastic Facts" (trivia) throughout the entries, the book is the veritable Encyclopedia Brotanica of the best inventions that make any man's life easier. Most of Mercer's selections are spot-on; we wouldn't want to live in a world without DVRs, air conditioning, or snooze buttons. However, some of his choices are questionable. Take the KFC Double Down. Yes, every man enjoys a greasy, artery-clogging dish from time to time, but this entry should have been sandwiched between a few unlisted manventions: Beta blockers and triple-bypass surgery. Others things we can do without: Mafia Wars (no one wants their inbox flooded with invites to a Facebook game) and the vuvuzuela (who thought we'd long for the days when foghorns monopolized white noise at sporting events?). Regardless, ManVentions remains a humorous take on the technological advancements of the past century, and reminds men what's so great about having a Y-chromosme.
