Shopping apps can be good, bad, and downright awful. But most require a learning curve and a lot of patience. Spring, which launches today, recognizes that usability is as important as looks. You get function with the form.
The interface looks like a supercharged version of Instagram, which makes using it a breeze. After you open it, you can scroll down through square images of products on offer from the companies you follow. (Public School, Band of Outsiders, Steven Alan, and Vianel are among the outfits that are already on Spring; Rag & Bone, Vince, Hugo Boss, and Levi's are all coming soon.) But instead of one image, Spring allows its brands to post multiple shots of what they're selling, meaning you can look at the shoes you're pondering from a variety of angles.
While social platforms have "likes," Spring has "loves." You can tap on an item you might want to buy to "love" it and save it for later. You can also share it with other Spring users you know who might not follow your beloved brand. And don't worry about getting inundated with images you've already seen on your friends' other social media accounts; Spring shows and sells only products in its database. It's a tightly curated experience.
Frankly it's a relief to not have to learn any new behaviors. You just have to decide whether or not you want to buy something.
An iPhone version of Spring is now available in Apple's App Store, but iPad and Android users will have to wait just a little bit longer to experience it.
