In his breakout role in the 1970s TV cop drama The Streets of San Francisco, Michael Douglas mixes investigative smarts with rugged masculinity. You can emulate the Ivy League-cowboy look with just a handful of items:

  1. Wide neckties. In the 1970s ties were up to four-and-a-half inches wide; nowadays it's hard to find oneswider than three and a half inches. Knit ties are especially narrow, though Lands' End has a nice, solid, two-and-three-quarter inch knit.

  2. A subtly patterned collared shirt. My favorite is the Oxford tattersall from Gitman Vintage.

  3. Snug pants (but definitely not hip-huggers). Life/After/Denim slim black chinos and cords, available at Revolve Clothing.

  4. Jacket (wide or narrow lapels). Hong Kong retailer YesStyle always has a variety of retro styles to choose from.
