The 1971 Mike Nichols film Carnal Knowledge starring Jack Nicholson is American prep at its best. The film explores the sexual relationships of two lifelong friends (Nicholson and Art Garfunkel) from their college days in the late 1940s through middle age in the early seventies. The fashion of the pals over the span of more than 20 years is entertainment on its own. During the college years, we see pleats, bow ties, toggle coats, and plenty of tweed. As we get to the 1960s, traditional prep turns into prep-chic by way of slim suits, button-downs, and trench coats. An all-American-style history lesson presented by the always dynamic Nicholson. A must-see.
